Squamish Windsports Society Expansion Update!

It is now official, the District of Squamish has included the Squamish Windsports Park in the budget for this year to the tune of $120,000.00. Now that this hurdle has been overcome work will begin on finishing what was started last year. The plan is to complete the launch, access, and sailing beaches this summer. This will make for a much safer and user-friendly experience when kiting and windsurfing at Squamish.

This project is the culmination of many years of work by the Squamish Windsurfing Society (Now the Squamish Windsports Society) and is a result of the ongoing efforts of hard-working volunteers such as Frank Musson, Jamie Martin, Keith Borg and our newest director, Dave Fenn. Many others have spent hours making improvements over the years and without the efforts of people like Jean-Michel Tremblay, Ross Peaty and many others the Spit would have remained a rough dyke which posed a threat to equipment and sailors alike.

The plan is to enlarge and upgrade the Spit this year and to add a new building and improve the viewing areas next year. Another capital infusion will be needed to complete the park next year, including washrooms, meeting area, lookout platform and change rooms.

We are incredibly excited about the new project. This winter the District has been adding recycled asphalt to the roadway and grading the road. Dust control is planned again this year. The access road has never been in better shape. We have many new mats for the rigging areas and this will make for better launching and storing of equipment during sailing days.

The new environmentally-sensitive four-stroke Sea Doo has arrived from No Limits Sports and we received a grant of $500.00 from Bombardier Canada to help defray the costs. We have one staff member returning from last year and it will be nice to have experienced staff on hand.

Pres. SWS
